So far, you may have bought website traffic, paid for clicks in PPCs, been in traffic exchanges. But what do you notice? Its that everytime you tend to slack off the traffic quickly disappears. So how do those other people get long term traffic, or “sticky” traffic? Well the asnwer isn’t a big “Secret” or some other crap like that. Its simply your content.
Subject does NOT matter
It doesn’t matter if your site is a personal site, a business site, a art and crafts site. You need to have good quality content. The big mistake that most businesses make is that they just put their product up for “order” and not much else.
Say for example you baby cribs, dont just put up a few pictures of baby cribs, a logo and just a order button. Write a few articles on lets say techniques to quieting a baby or good ways to put the baby to sleep (you can also hire people to write articles, just make sure that they dont use duplicate content or copied content). So the basic idea is that no matter what the subject of your site is, you should always have articles or other content related to that subject for your potential and existing customers to explore freely. This is almost always the biggest “sticky” factor.
Submit your Content
Although having good quality relevant content is important to have on your site, it is even more important to make sure that your content is doing what it can to its full potential. You can unleash this potential by exposing your content to more people. How?
Article submission.
Article submission sites will gladly accept your material if you’ve truly put effort into writing it. Once accepted, many more people will be able to access your content and many times when people read content that they think is useful or good they visit the authors site to see more of it (include your URL in your articles or in the bio after the article).
So whats the moral? Make sure that your content gets exposed to other people instead of just your current visitors, this will really thicken the stream of quality traffic to your site.
Do not “Set and Forget”
The content I said that you should write can’t be a one time thing. Old content is just as bad as duplicate content. This section isn’t going to be a long lecture because its simple, keep updating your content to give your visitors something to come back to.
Other cool ways to get some good traffic
Content, however important it may be, is just one dimension of creating a steady quality traffic flow to your site. There are other techniques such as contests and awards. Let me explain a bit more.
Contests:
Viral marketing. Ever heard of it? (You should otherwise you’ve been living under a rock). Well incase you haven’t, its marketing that spreads by itself with people telling other people about you (and not just yourself bragging about your site). Contests, like weekly drawings etc. can be really effective. Lets say your website sells LCD screens. Have a contest about lets say a month long where people enter to win a 17″ LCD monitor (Yes I know this item is kind of expensive, but who said marketing was free?). If you post this on forums (maybe gaming forums, tech forums or computer forums) you’ll be sure to get a lot of participants (which can be converted into sales). Experiment with contests, think of creative prizes, its a great way to strengthen the flow of traffic to your site.
Web Awards
Website design awards from your site is more a SEO technique than anything else, but the fact is that it still works. How does it work? Simple. You give out “awards” to “lucky” webmasters that you say have nicely desinged webpages. Then you give them code to put into their site to “display” their award, this is where you sneak in a anchor to your site. What this does is, one, give you a portion of the “winners” traffic, and two, it increases your link popularity and therefor search engine ranking.
Also when giving out your awards, you should select sites that are mostly relevant to the subject of your site so that the links that they might eventually have to your site are of high quality. I know this sounds sneaky and evil, but what works works.
Thats basically it, follow those guidelines to have a kickass flood of visitors to your site.

Im in the advertising business. At least thats what theyre still calling it. Significant blocks of time transpire, however, where nothing resembling advertising passes through my companys job queue, or past my desk. I checked again just to be sure. Yep, Web site designs, optimized web site re-write, corporate identity package, radio spots (theres something), video production and streaming, html emails, logo designs, CD package design, article development and submissions, sign graphics, travel brochure, banner ads, SEO work (plenty of it), news releases. I was right - no full-page advertising in queue this week - no string of print ad copywriting assignments, no huddling with the creative team to concept for an upcoming campaign (radio spot concept and copy is complete).
Oh, sure we have been frequently required to write some so-called ad copy?full of key words. I hold hope that someday, search engines will code their bots to rank search results based on strength of benefit?(SOB).
To top it off, I even had a friend who sells print travel advertising begin to tell me how in the age of Tivo, broadcast advertising was a short-timer in the marketing mix. I didnt have the heart to ask him if he felt the same about print advertising, based on the proliferation of online tools available to advertisers…the ones who sustain my business and his.
All of these issues led me to wonder if print advertising is a dying art?
I peeled myself from my computer, where Ive been engrossed in three hours of blurry-eyed internet research, finding better, more efficient and cost-effective promotional opportunities for clients, including SEO, PPC, RSS, forums, article submissions, directory listings, AdWords, search engine advertising (well, really not advertising, is it?), podcasting, blogging, webcasting, and on and on. Where did my time go?
Deciding that my work day was over, I left the office. Later, I walked into my living room to find my beautiful and charming wife lounged on the sofa reading Southern Living. She looked peaceful, blissful even, there flipping the pages and sipping her freshly brewed chai tea latte with milk and Splenda. I sat down beside her, silent, and observed as she lost herself in the magazine. A couple of times she uttered what?? I said Nothing. Im just enjoying the quiet.?/p>
She scanned it all, read some of it, including ads. She even turned down corners on some of the pages ?Must be a recipe,?I thought. Then it struck me: shes been doing this since I met her, even before that. She wasnt lounged on the couch with a laptop computer diligently, wirelessly downloading web page after web page of 256-color heaven. And why not? I mean, ads in the online version of their print counterparts are much less intrusive on the reader. Right?
Okay, now I was curious. And I tried to do some quick and meaningful researchonline of course. What I found was a confusing array of seemingly contradictory information from various sources, some known, many unknown. Some said magazine and dailies readership was going up due to the internet. The other side was saying, you guessed it, the opposite.
I shut down my computer.
Im going with my intuition on this. My own experience has taught me that sometimes your hunch on going with one headline over another is dead-center. So, here I go.
Magazines - and even newspapers (despite recent decline) - and those who choose to advertise in them are not going anywhere. The names might change, but periodicals as a media form has made it into the stubborn fabric of our culture. We read. We like to look at things, and at our own pace. A magazine, in this light, is even more user friendly than a computer. No typing is required. No booting up is necessary. No downloads delay us, just a cup of your favorite brand of chai tea latte to sip between articles. Was this the same brand advertised in Southern Living? Probably.
So, Ive come to the conclusion that the internet has created another media (despite many arguments that the internet is not a media?. And, it offers many opportunities to disclose and distribute information, and promote a company, individuals, group, products and services. And it does so ?brilliantly in some instances, and clumsily in others ?just as other mediaimperfectly.
But, as for print advertising? I believe that as time goes by, it will retain its importance in the marketing mix. In fact, I believe it will become more segmented and targeted, as the media that contain it and thrive on it, will continue to be forced to evolve.
In response to my travel advertising friend, who prophesied the death of television advertisingperhaps Ill cover that in another article.

When you spend time with Mary Stengel Austen, you come away with one feeling. “That woman is affable.” After thinking it over, you might find other words which describe her: smart, realistic, enthusiastic, tough minded, determined, articulate, strategic, focused. But you’ll always include affable in your memory of her because that’s what she is.
Perhaps she has to be that way because of the two most significant challenges in her life: managing five small children and managing one of the largest ad agencies in this part of the country, Tierney Communications. Affable is good, perhaps necessary.
Having grown up in this area, she then graduated from Lafayette College and was directed to a job in sales for age copier company. Quickly convinced that she was not made for a direct sales role, she found her way into the former Spiro agency and found the career that challenged her, enthused her and excited her. Obviously, she loved what she did and, after a few other steps forward, she still loves what she does as president and CEO of Tierney and its 135 employees.
Mary sees great opportunity for the advertising business but she insists that success will come to those who understand that it’s a “time for new reality.” That’s her way to acknowledge and respect change which is happening faster and faster. She believes that
agencies must adapt more quickly to market changes, technology changes and even to the changing expectations of employees. More than ever before, she hopes that Tierney is understanding and respecting clients’ perceptions of their own needs which often change with the speed of light.
Her concerns for the overall health of the agency business are partially based on the pressures clients feel in these changing times. It’s not a new thought that solid relationships with clients are vital for ad agencies. However, those relationships are harder and harder to develop because of the pressures of time and the pressures of the bottom line. However, she says the key to a superb client relationship is no different today than it was ten years ago. Just remember that “It’s not about you, it’s about your client.” Good advice.
When pressed, she has some advice for clients, too. Directed to clients in just a few words, the “wisdom” of Mary Stengel Austen is simple to state. She would ask them to be careful about articulating the business plan and the marketing objectives to the agency. She would urge them to have realistic expectations about their marketing/advertising efforts. She would hope for an open, honest working relationship with the agency and a consistent viewpoint about image, brand and sales. She also fully understands that clients have their own pressures and sometimes are forced to abandon well thought out plans.
A consistent lesson has guided her in her home life, in college and in her career. She has learned the importance of being able to multi-task. She says that learning to “juggle” has helped her in her career and in her role as a Mother. According to her, “Kids and clients have helped me to learn how to prioritize and have forced me to remain focused.” She further explains, “Both clients and children need to feel as if they are the most important thing in your world.” In these two separate situations, they are, so it’s working out quite well for Mary, for Tierney and for her family.
Predictably, her hopes for her own career cover a broad spectrum of topics. When she thinks about her life in ten years, she first mentions her family and its importance. Then she talks about continuing to enjoy her work, about continuing to learn and grow and continuing to do the things she does best. She is quite comfortable and enjoys managing good people and hopes to continue that function. She also wants as much strategic involvement as possible, both in her own operation and in the operations of clients.
She gives an interesting example. When a client crisis occurs, she hopes to contribute to the strategy/solution and to “Slow things down when others are compelled to speed things up.” She seems calm and, apparently, is convinced that calm and smart is better than frenzied and active without a good plan.
Mary Stengel Austen is even more than a busy, successful executive at Tierney and a busy, effective family woman. She is also a committed supporter of the community, serving on many boards including the Please Touch Museum, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, Maternity Care Coalition, Philadelphia Ad Club, Lafayette College Advisory Council and as Chairperson of the Pennsylvania Economy League.
She lives in Radnor with her husband, Peter, who is an Insurance Broker and her five children: Thomas(8), Andrew (7), Christopher (6), John (4) and Sally (2).
Affable? Yes. Successful? Yes. A nice combination!
